Experiment: Analysing molar mass of Aspirin Essay

Introduction In 1899 the Bayer Company of Germany introduced the ethanoate ester of salicylic acid naming it, ‘Aspirin’. Aspirin is an acid, it can be titrated with a base such as sodium hydroxide to the equivalence point. The following chemical equation describe the acid-base reaction that will be observed in this experiment. H-Aspirin + NaOH ——> Na-Aspirin + H2O (acid) (base) (salt) The above chemical equation is balanced as written. An indicator will be used to provide a way to visually determine the endpoint of the titration. Phenolphthalein changes from colourless to a faint pink while bromothymol blue changes from yellow to a faint blue at a pH of around 8. Aim To calculate the molar mass of Aspirin Hypothesis The chemical formula of Aspirin is C9H8O4. It can also be written as C6H5(OCOCH3)COOH. In this experiment, Aspirin, which is an acid, will react with sodium hydroxide, NaOH in an acid-base reaction to produce salt and water. This analysis makes use the fact that aspirin is a monoprotic acid and therefore reacts with NaOH according to the equation: Conclusion The experimental molar mass of Aspirin, C6H5(OCOCH3)COOH is close to the theoretical value. The difference between the experimental value and the accepted value is not really big. However, there are difference between the experimental molar mass of aspirin when using phenolphthalein and bromothymol blue as indicator. The obtained molar mass of aspirin when using phenolphthalein indicator is smaller than using bromothymol blue as indicator. The difference with the theoretical value is also less. Due to this difference, the percentage error when using phenolphthalein is smaller than bromothymol blue. Therefore, phenolphthalein is a better indicator in this acid-base titration reaction. This is because the final pH or the endpoint of titration lies in between pH range of phenolphthalein that is 8.2-10.0 and not in bromothymol blue which is 6.0-7.6 . This is the reason why phenolphthalein indicator is able to produce more accurate result than bromothymol blue. Evaluation There are some weaknesses that were detected throughout the experiment. Firstly, the volume of indicator are not fix in this experiment. Using drops is not really suitable as it may distort the volume of indicator in this experiment. The difference may not really big but it still can affect the final result. Secondly, the mixture of aspirin, C6H5(OCOCH3)COOH and sodium hydroxide, NaOH is not stirred during the titration. This may produce uneven and not uniform result as the NaOH is not totally mix with the aspirin. The neutralization process may only occur on the surface of the aspirin solution. Having said that, this experiment is successfully analyzing the molar mass of aspirin. The experimental value is close to the theoretical value. Further improvement In order to improve the results of the future experiments, several ways can be implemented. Firstly, the volume of indicator use should be fixed instead of using drops. By using this way, the level of uncertainty of the final results can be reduced. Besides that, the mixture of aspirin solution and NaOH need to be stirred throughout the titration process. More uniform results can be obtained by implementing this method.

Animals Intentional Literary Effects In Miss Julie

Animals Intentional Literary Effects In Miss Julie In Miss Julie, Julie’s dog, Diana, serves as an embodiment of Julie’s fate. Diana gets into an affair with a pug of lower standing, the â€Å"gatekeeper’s pug†. Through the use of antitheses- purebred bitch and gatekeeper’s pug it foreshadows the future dualism- aristocrat and commoner where Julie transcends her social boundary by having a sexual affair with Jean. This parallelism follows that just as Diana faces severe consequences for her actions â€Å"that Miss Julie won’t allow†Ã‚   [ 2 ]   , Julie’s sexual folly has dire consequences. Julie in demanding Christine prepares â€Å"some filthy muck†Ã‚   [ 3 ]   for an immediate abortion conjures ideas of death, termination and annihilation engendering in readers an ominous, apocalyptic mood which foreshadows Julie’s termination of her own life. Coupled with the sensual engagement with the use of an olfactory imagery in â€Å"the [abortion potion] smellâ€⠄¢s infernal†Ã‚   [ 4 ]   , it has overtones of fiendish punishment creating an image of hell, invoking in audience the wrathful punishment for follies such as these, heightening the foreboding sinister horizon ahead. After Julie’s sexual folly later on in the play, audiences are once again reminded â€Å"She, who all but had poor Diana shot for running after the gatekeeper’s pug!†Ã‚   [ 5 ]   , provoking heightened apprehension of Julie’s punishment as has been prescribed to Diana. Miss Julie then â€Å"enters in travelling clothes with a small birdcage.†Ã‚   [ 6 ]   By engaging audience with a visual image, it explicitly shows Julie is trapped just like the bird in a small birdcage. The bird’s confinement in this tiny cage is symbolic of Miss Julie being trapped by the consequences of her action for which there is no absolving. This parallels Julie’s anguish at recognizing her actions are unforgivable and would not be pa rdoned. Eventually, Jean snatches the bird from Julie, â€Å"takes it to the chopping block and picks up the kitchen axe†Ã‚   [ 7 ]   . This act of snatching the bird from Julie is symbolic of Jean taking control of Julie and Julie losing control over her own being. The killing of the greenfinch foreshadows Julie’s eventual suicide. Like the Finch who dies at the hands of Jean, Julie’s eventual suicide death is dictated by Jean and is emblematic of patriarchal society. Preceding this, arising from her aristocracy, Julie asserts dominance over Jean who belongs to the working-class. Contrastingly, this very act of snatching the bird and Jean â€Å"bringing down the axe† signifies the reversal of roles on grounds of the more dominant sex regardless of economic position.   [ 8 ]   Jean’s act, true to social Darwinism, clearly show that it is the male that defines the female, it is he on whom she will hinge her existence into, her existence is lar gely defined by how he allows [or not] it to be.   [ 9 ]   Like the Greenfinch, Julie succumbs to her own ruin, analogous to female sensibility succumbing to the male, phallic, patriarchal order, reaffirming man’s control over human affairs.   [ 10 ]    Similarly, like the death of the greenfinch which cannot survive outside, and who is saved through Jean’s brutality, Julie’s death is an escape. Julie’s eventual suicide dictated by Jean is the fulfillment of the sado-masochistic ritual where the victim desires her fatal end, the consummation of her masochistic fantasy.   [ 11 ]

Sociodrama Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Sociodrama - Essay Example The sharing is a time to begin to process and integrate what has taken place moments before in action. (Sternberg and Garcia, 2000). There are various techniques in sociodrama. Sculpting refers to the phase when the director physically places individuals to show how they are perceived to relate. For example, arm in arm, back to back and a stiff pose with a pointed finger. The director lets the people holding the roles begin to speak. Participants can also be taken out of the sculpt and allowed to view it. By stepping out of the sociodrama, the person has some time to reflect on it and perhaps make some changes to the sculpt. (Eckloff, 2006). Doubling is where one group member puts him/herself beside a person in a role and gives voice to that person's unspoken thoughts and feelings. The more a doubler faithfully imitates the posture and actions of the person they are doubling, the more effective it is. It can be used to show that there is something else the character could say rather than just thinking it. Voices is really another form of doubling. Voices can encompass various roles: the women's movement, church, sanctity of the family, government, woman not wanting children, and historical facts. Role reversal is another technique. With role reversal one person moves out of one role and into another. Reversal is utilized in a confrontational scene where it is helpful for one person to understand a situation if he tackles it from another perspective. Soliloquy is another technique. The director stops the action to gives a person space and time to say what is going on inside him/her. This helps the individual explore the role in a way the scene does not allow.Sociodrama has an ending. It begins with a scene, moves to broader issues, then returns with fresh insights. There is time for sharing at the end of the scene. People may share what they have learned from playing different roles. Other volunteers describe what it was like for them and the emotional release which they may have felt. Group members may share what they have learned about the group theme, topic and the thematic issue explored Sociodrama in Theatre Sociodrama can by its unique methods, give back to theatre, helping it to renew itself spontaneously and creatively. Sociodrama may not have theatrical expertise as its aim, but it can be used successfully in preparing for a variety of theatrical endeavors. There are three types of theatre experiences that are relevant to sociodrama: Theatre Arts, Theatre Arts Education, and Theatre-in-Education (TIE). Theatre arts education covers the entire spectrum of theatre aesthetics, focusing on training for actors, directors, and writers. It also involves training students to execute all other facets of theatrical production--for example, scenic design, costume design, stage management. These programs focus on stress professional training, preparing students for jobs in the theatre. This type of training is practical and specific and new programs dwell on the development of the artistic qualities in the student as an integral person. Sociodrama in Education Gordon Vallins founded the Theatre in Education in England, in the 1960s. His vision was to dramatize non-theatre curriculum programs to improve and upgrade

Academic Journal Article Evaluation - Assignment Example One hundred forty five students in romantic relationships took part in the study on nonverbal communication. The students were split in different divisions and answered the questions according to their understanding. Prinsen and Punyanunt-Carter (2010) found different responses among the people in the relationships. These responses support the authors research on the ideology that there is a huge disparity in nonverbal communication between men and women who are in varying stages of their relationship. The study found that women rated issues on nonverbal communication statistically higher compared to those considered by men. Men on the other hand rated the imperativeness of nonverbal communication as more crucial and should change as well as increase for relationships to work. Additionally, the scholars also found out that sex dissimilarities in nonverbal communication have the capability to cause message misinterpretation in a romantic interaction. The editorial was extremely informative considering that I am in a romantic relationship. The different aspects discussed added value in my life because I now have the knowledge on how to handle nonverbal

Budgeting Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1

Budgeting - Essay Example Not planning earlier can bring up capacity issues; cash flow issues etc. for the organization. An estimation of costs and revenues is required to know the estimated profit. The profit is not attained in a single day. All days need to be planned to achieve those profits, daily operations are therefore need to be managed; budgeting prepares the managers for the whole day decisions, which he cannot act to on a single day basis. A clear thinking and understanding is developed. Budgeting in advance also helps determine the borrowing requirements, early relationship building with the lender, communicating earlier the borrowing needs. And reasonable budgets and forecasts to repay can build up credibility in the eyes of the lender. Once the borrowing needs are determined and committed in the pipeline, the spending timing and needs are allocated as and where required. The budgeting exercise can become hectic and set accountability for the managers. This leads to driving their focus away from the day to operations but not really. It builds up coordination and integration among the cross functional areas and within everyone in different functions of the organization. Everyone is considered accountable for his or her actions; a sense of ownership develops amongst the employees and hence a company would want its employees to be motivated enough to achieve their and company's goals. This only happens when objectives of both are aligned and employees are motivated enough to achieve the same. These overall benefits in day to day affairs. Major inputs to the master budget and usefulness of each The major inputs to the master budget are operating and the financial budget. Master budget also helps create a linkage between the two afore mentioned budgets. Each of these budgets has their own importance and none can succeed without the other. The operating budget comprises the sales budget, production budget, the direct materials budget, the direct labor budget, the factory overhead budget, the inventory budget, cost of goods sold budget, selling and administrative expense budget, and the budgeted income statement, which is the snapshot of the operations of the organization for a period. Whereas, the financial budget comprises the cash budget, the capital budget, and the budgeted balance sheet. All these inputs on a standalone basis do not have any meaning until seen within the full picture. Sales budget will determine the top line for the company and production budget support sales because it has to be determined how many units are to be produced to support that level of sales. Materials, labor and overhead determine the costs, similarly the selling and administrative expenses. The inventory budget helps in knowing how many units are carried from the earlier period and how many will fulfill the demand for the period. Financial budget takes care of the funding aspect. Why would a company want to create a master budget There are many purposes that a company can serve by developing master

Area studies 2 - Essay Example 3). As such, different countries impose disparate legal ramifications for people caught in drug trafficking. For a lot of countries in the Asian pacific region, the ultimate sanction of imposing the death penalty for drug-related crimes has been revealed. Amnesty International reported that capital punishment is the legal recourse for drug-trafficking and drug-related crimes, in sixteen Asian Pacific countries, to wit: â€Å"Bangladesh, Brunei, China, India, Indonesia, North Korea, South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Viet Nam† (Asia-Pacific: Death sentences for drug-related crimes rise in region 1). The current discourse aims to explore drug trafficking in China, by examining relevant statistics, its impact on the people, and any further proposed recommendations resulting from the findings. trafficked in China is in Myanmar (Yong-An). As disclosed, â€Å"the Myanmar-Yunnan-Guangdong route is a traditional and preferred drug trafficking route. Some of the drugs that come into Southern China are consumed directly there, or may be trafficked onward to interior provinces† (Yong-An 4). The alarming fact is that despite the wide-known fact that drug-related crimes would be punishable by death in the country, statistics still revealed rampant increases in abusers as reported by the National Narcotics Control Commission, from 150,000 in 1991 to 1,545,000 in 2010, or a 930% increase (Yong-An). Likewise, the number of deaths or executions in China could not be effectively monitored or accurately determined due to the secrecy stance maintained by the state (Gallahue, Gunawan and Rahman). The authors revealed that â€Å"China continues to execute more people than any other country. According to the China Law Yearbook, as reported by the Anti-Death Penalty Asia Network (ADPAN), China has a nearly 100 per cent

Stem Cell Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Stem Cell - Research Paper Example The intentions of this study are stem cells, the cells found in multi-cellular organisms, both humans and animals. The cells have the ability to renew through miotic cell division where they differentiate into specialized cell types. The stem cell exists in two types, namely the embryonic stem cell and the adult stem cells. The cells have the ability to treat a wide range of diseases which has resulted in many technologies being employed to study their viability and effectiveness. The study of stem cells has become common due to the ability of the stem cells to perform several functions. This is due to the fact that the stem cells have the ability to specialize into any desired cell type. Genetic diseases have become a serious issue in the world today. It is therefore, important to understand how the genetic diseases occur and what can be done to remedy the situation. Genetic diseases caused by chromosomal anomalies’ can be rectified by using stem cells. This is due to the fac t that stem cells have differentiation and proliferation effects that can help in addressing the situation. Stem cell application is therefore important in the prevention and correction of the genetic diseases. Scientific research has shown that stem cells are important in the treatment of several types of diseases that people suffer from. Stem cells are mainly used in the treatment of diseases that require organ transplant. This is due to their ability to differentiate into cells that exhibit special characteristics. ... Stem cells are mainly used in the treatment of diseases that require organ transplant (Hayat, 2011). This is due to their ability to differentiate into cells that exhibit special characteristics (Klimanskaya, Chung, Becker, Lu & Lanza, 2006). Stem cells are currently being used to carry out cancer therapies for those who are diagnosed with the disease. Cell therapy in this case is carried out to replace the tissues affected by the disease with the stem cells. This has helped in the treatment of cancer of the breast and skin. The stem cell is also used in the treatment of brain and blood diseases, and in tissue and organ regeneration (Hayat, 2011). Understanding Human and Animal Development Human beings develop from stem cells. Stem cell study is important as it helps people in understanding how human beings and animals develop from conception to death (Viegas, 2003; Takahashi & Yamanaka, 2006). This is due to the fact that there are some diseases that affect humans as a result of abn ormal cell differentiation and proliferations. Due to this fact, abnormal stem cell division may cause certain diseases. Therefore, it is important to have a good understanding of stem cells will assist in the prevention of abnormal changes in the stem cells and assist in getting better treatment for diseases associated with poor stem cells such as cancer. Arguments against the Use of Stem Cells Ethical considerations Despite the many benefits of the stem cells, there are some cons associated with their application. The use of the embryonic stem cell goes against human dignity and right to life. This is because the embryos are considered to be living beings and should be left to develop uninhibited to become an adult. Human life is very valuable and should never be voluntarily destroyed

Population and Economy Essay Example for Free

Population and Economy Essay Before seventeenth century the world population increased very slowly i.e,it has been estimated that by 1650 the population had doubled since the year to about 500million.Over the following 200years the rate of increase was much faster ,so that by 1850 the population had more than doubled to 1200million.After that, the population growth accelerated so rapidly that people talked about a population â€Å"explosion†;in 1927 it reached the 2000million mark and by the year 2000,it had passed 6000 million. In 2003 the UN calculated that if the population continued to increase at the same rate, the global total would be somewhere between 10000 million and 14000 million by 2050, depending on how effectively family planning campaigns were carried out. It was also estimated, given the much lower birth rates in the developed world, that almost 90 per cent of the people would be living in the poorer countries. During the 1980s the spread of HIV/AIDS reached pandemic proportions; most countries in the world were affected, but again it the poor nations of the Third World which suffered worst. The population growth of the nineteenth century helped to stimulate further economic development. There was a plentiful workforce and more people to buy goods, and this encouraged more investment and enterprise. Nor were there any great problems about feeding and educating these growing numbers because prosperity meant that the necessary resources were available. Later on, there were unexpected effects on the age structure of the population in the developed nations which was especially true in Europe where, because of the very low birth-rates and longer life expectancy, a growing proportion of the population was over 65. Read more:  Advantages and Disadvantages of Population The rapid population growth caused serious problems: some countries, like India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, became overcrowded and there was insufficient land to go round. This forced people to move into towns and cities, but these were already over-crowded and there were not enough houses or jobs for all the new arrivals. All areas of the world succeeded in increasing their food production during the late 1960s and 190s, thanks to what became known as the â€Å"green revolution. Scientists developed new strains of heavy cropping rice and wheat on short, fast-growing stems, helped by fertilizers and irrigation schemes. For a time, food supplies seemed to be well ahead of population growth. In the USA crop yields increased three-fold between 1945 and 1995 and the Americans were able to export surplus crops to over a hundred countries. Third World governments were forced to spend their valuable cash to feed, house, and educate their growing populations. But these used resources which they would have preferred to spend on industrializing and modernizing their countries, and so their economic development was delayed. The general shortage of resources meant that the poorest countries also lacked sufficient cash to spend on health care. Health systems in many poorer countries were collapsing, and the situation was becoming worse because richer countries were reducing aid.

Overfishing and it Effects to the Environment Essay Example for Free

Overfishing and it Effects to the Environment Essay For the last 10 years, the world had been aware of the various changes which had been occurring within our environment. It is known to us that the actions which our ancestors had done in the past have now caused us many problems such as global disasters that could truly ruin the future of the next generation. In the event of the problem of climate change (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, 2005), various things had come up such as pollution of the air and various water resources. Due to this, different aspect of the environment is deeply affected and sometimes devastated because of the scenarios present. For many people who live in a place where in fishing is their main industry, it is immediately declared that their primary source of income is directly affected by the harsh conditions of the changing weather brought by climate change. Although it is true the climate change is affecting the waters which is one of the main source of our resources, it could not be hidden that the individuals who are directly involved in the industry are also to be blamed to the catastrophe in the water industry. In the waters, one of the main problems which are faced by the industries is the lessening of the fishes in the see. One of the main culprits of this issue is the over fishing of various fishermen who are connected to the huge companies. Over fishing had been a main concern for various non-governmental organizations such that of the Green Peace. It was said by the respectful environmental group that â€Å"over-exploitation and mismanagement of fisheries has already led to some spectacular fisheries collapses. The cod fishery off Newfoundland, Canada collapsed in 1992, leading to the loss of some 40,000 jobs in the industry. The cod stocks in the North Sea and Baltic Sea are now heading the same way and are close to complete collapse† (Green Peace, 2008). Even before human beings have discovered new technologies, it is known that fishes are the main source of food for many. Based on various historical books such as the Bible, fish was the main commodity for the people in order for them to eat. As years gone by, more and more people are inclined to get more fish in order for them to gain income to provide their families. Various innovations and technological advancements were also used to increase the number of catch due to the increasing number of demand for fish. Based on the studies made by the Green Peace and their team of scientists it was stated that overfishing truly is causing a grave danger for the marine life and diversity of our oceans. Most of the fishermen who have the capacity to catch enough fish are those that utilize nets which are not suited to legally catch fish. Many of the fishermen use nets which has smaller holes which do not allow the smaller fishes to escape. This type of scenario happens most of the time, therefore the young fishes were not given a chance to grow and be mature enough to be caught. Through the Young Peoples Trust for the Environment, types of events happen due to commercial fishing. There are various techniques that are done by fishermen in order for them to capture various kinds of fishes. There are fishes which are called â€Å"pelagic† meaning they live within the upper parts of the water making them the most accessible fishes to be caught by fishing nets which are connected to the gigantic ships that fishermen use. It is stated that, â€Å"net suspended from floats is stretched between two boats so that fish swim into it. Fish are unable to swim backwards, so once they are caught in the net, there is no escape unless they are small enough to fit through the net’s mesh† (Young People’s Trust for the Environment, 2008). Other fishes that are in the deeper level of the sea are caught differently. There is also a big net placed under the boat which then gets everything that it captures along the way. The marine resources that I catch were not only fish but also the coral reefs, the schools and other organisms which are not supposed to be captured during the act of fishing. Such action is not only disastrous for the young fishes but also the organisms within the environment because they are also being displaced and even killed when there are commercial ships around. (n. p. ) In order to mitigate the problem of over fishing different agencies have created ways in order for them to fully destabilize the problem which is being caused by over fishing. One of the main agencies are the United Nations in which launched various types of programs and amendments to protect the marine resources all over the world as well as protect the marine resources that our world currently have. In 1995, an article was written about the treaty in which was proposed under the United Nations which addresses the problem in over fishing. It states that the treaty should be approved by 185 countries which then be ratified by 30 countries in order for the treaty to be fully taken into place. In addition, another program which had been under the United Nations is the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement (Government of Canada, 2006). However, Green Peace and World Wildlife Fund had expressed that this treaty would not directly answer the problems of over fishing. In fact, Matthew Gianni had stated that there is a great possibility that yearly there will be new innovations of boats which will be able to detect fish which then result to much more damage to our marine resources (Crossette, 1995). With such article, it directly states that these international organizations does not trust that a plain agreement with various countries thus they suggests more than just an agreement but a full arrangement and limitation of the types of vessels which should be reasonable to be able to catch enough fish. In addition, fishes which will be caught will be enough in size and maturity which will then leave the small fishes to be fully grown and create another generation of fishes. The World Wildlife Fund have done their own actions in order for help create a sustainable fishing for the future generation. They have noted various types of steps in which they called: Fisheries Partnership Agreements which listed these various general actions to fully attain sustainable fishing: †¢ respect sustainable fishing levels account for environmental costs †¢ protect local fishers †¢ include compliance with flag state laws †¢ are based on best practice fisheries management †¢ include cooperation on research and monitoring †¢ ensure adequate monitoring and enforcement capacity †¢ ensure fairer sharing of economic benefits between producer and extractor nations (World Wildlife Fund, 2008) In conclusion, many of our world’s resources had now been gone and are still being abused by various types of industries due to the demand of resources the global economy has. But then, we should remember that we must learn how to conserve our natural resources so that there would not be scarce resources for the future. Like the World Wildlife Fund and the Green Peace have stated, it is not enough the there will be treaties and agreements under these types of issues. It is still important that the mitigation process should be continuously checked in order to incur changes for the environment, the amount of resources as well as to secure the lives of the future generation. The continuous efforts of the international community, through the help of various countries as well as the international organization will lead to a prosperous and much more peaceful fellowship with one another. On the other hand, the issue of climate change must also be resolved for the reason that it also affects the issue regarding overfishing and lessening of the resources available for various marine industries. Although there are issues like this, it should be taken into mind that the responsibility is not only through organizations but also through an individualistic perspective.

The Effect of Parenting Styles on Child Development

The Effect of Parenting Styles on Child Development Is parenting really significant? Does parenting have a positive impact on a childs life? One may wonder if his or her parenting style has effectively influenced his or her childs complete development. This paper probes the effects of parenting styles on a childs development. A childs holistic development, specifically psychological (emotional and social) and cognitive (intellect) developments, may be affected by numerous factors. These factors may be biological and environmental, which includes culture, family and more significantly parenting styles. Parenting styles used, though not solitary effects, have an absolute impact on the childs future. According to Baumrind (1971), there are three parenting styles namely authoritative (demanding and responsive), authoritarian (demanding and unresponsive) and permissive (responsive but undemanding). More recently, uninvolved parenting (unresponsive and undemanding) has been recognized as a fourth style. Though each parenting style has varyi ng characteristics, it is crucial for the child to receive both nurture and autonomy in order to obtain adequate development. Parenting styles such as authoritative and uninvolved influence a childs cognitive and psychological development but authoritative parenting is preferred. Every childs cognitive development is impacted by his or her parents parenting style. Cognition pertains to the intellectual process by obtaining knowledge. According to Bjorklund (1989), Cognition involves mental activity of all types. It includes activity that is geared toward acquiring, understanding and modifying information. (p. 4). According to Piaget, children dynamically assemble knowledge by four stages-sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational and formal operational-as they control and discover their world. It is necessary for parents to be cognizant of the effects of parenting styles on a childs cognition. Berk (2009) stated that, Authoritative child-rearing style-the most successful approach-involves high acceptance and involvement, adaptive control techniques, and appropriate autonomy granting (p. 569). Authoritative parents are affectionate, attentive and receptive to their offsprings wants, yet they implement firm, rational control and are usually demanding. T hey inspire the childs independence and decision making so that the child will be able to make the right choices in life. They encourage dialogues and joint decision making whenever there is a disagreement between parent and child, thus paying attention to the childs perspective and providing sensible supervision is necessary. A childs cognitive development is optimum for independence and decision making skills when experiencing positive and maximum parental support. Hence, an authoritative parent is said to be highly involved in a childs development, offering positive and maximum parental support which encourages the development of a personality. A child reared by the authoritative parenting style exhibits high self-esteem, self control and task persistence (Berk, 2009). In regards to a child who has high self-esteem, positive values and beliefs are passed on from the parents because of their high participation in the offsprings life. For example, the importance of these parental beliefs and positive values are adopted from family discussions and family rules and practices. Research has shown that children reared by authoritative parents have great academic success because the parents are extremely involved in all aspects of their lives and particularly, their academic achievements. Authoritative parents will praise their children for striving; help them with the difficulties they face in their school work and encourage them to do their best. Children given this positive and maximum parental support believe they have the competence to succeed in life. The different areas of a childs development are interconnected thus influencing one another. Psychological development, defined by Encyclopedia Britannica, refers to the emotional and social competence and operation of ones life span. Authoritative parents are demanding-have high hopes and expectations for their children. Benson Hiath (2009) postulates that Children of authoritative parents exhibit low amount of internalizing behaviour such as depression and anxiety and externalizing behaviour such as antisocial behaviour and substance use (p. 290). In essence, offspring of these parents are more socially and instrumentally competent than children reared by other parenting styles. Authoritative parents also show interest in their childs social life. It is important that they know about their childs whereabouts and the friends he or she keeps. Therefore, the child will be less likely to be antisocial in behaviour because of their high autonomy granting. Similarly, it is important to note that though these parents are involved in the childs social life, they do not dictate the type of friends the child should keep. Instead, they provide good advice and allow the child to make his or her own decision. Benson Hiath further states that, Children of authoritative parents are better equipped to cope with life stresses and less likely to succumb to peer pressure, due to the competencies authoritative parents have instilled (p. 290). Based on research presented, it can be concluded that authoritative parenting has a positive impact on a childs complete development. Additionally, a childs cognitive and psychological developments are also influenced by uninvolved parenting. Unlike the authoritative parent, Benson Hiath (2009) believes the indifferent parent is not dedicated to parenting roles and is disinterested in helping foster optimal development of the child (p. 283). The uninvolved parent is said to have little or no participation in their childs development thus the child is likely to have less interest in his or her own development. These parents have either despised their children or probably do not have the time or energy to take care of them because priority is given to their own life problems and stresses instead. In contrast to authoritative parenting, children reared by the uninvolved parenting style display poor emotional control and low self-esteem. Children of these parents are likely to have low self-esteem as well as poor school performance because they feel unappreciated by their parents, due to the parents low acceptance and non-involvement in their lives. For example, a parent who is parentally stressed and shows no interest in the childs academic achievement will not encourage the child to develop academically. As a result the child will become a low achiever because there is no parental guidance and support when he or she gets an assignment and needs parental assistance. Additionally, the child is likely to have difficulties making decisions and expressing views effectively because the uninvolved parents are lacking in the areas decision making and perspective. Uninvolved parents are undemanding often showing little control. A child who feels neglected by his or her parents is likely to have a deficit in his or her psychological development. The child of an uninvolved parent may have behavioural problem such as antisocial behaviours and substance abuse. This is so because the parent-child relationship is poor and so the child is emotionally detached and withdrawn. Due to the lack of positive guidance (no parental values, beliefs and expectations), the child may be led by the wrong type of friends and as a result find himself or herself in a destructive path. For example, parents who are uninvolved in their childs social life set no expectations and allow their child to do as he or she pleases; searching for affection and attention in the wrong places. Studies have also shown that uninvolved parenting, unlike authoritative parenting, has a negative impact on a childs holistic development. From a biblical perspective, a parent should train up a child in the way he or she should go, so when he is old he or she will not depart from it. Research have concluded that parenting plays a minor role in the development of a child and that the impacts are surpassed by the effects of inheritance and society. Despite such claims it is revealed that parenting styles, though not the only influence, wield great effect on a childs development. Based on previous studies, authoritative parenting is preferred because it has the most positive influence on a childs entire development while uninvolved parenting has the most negative impact. Some parents use more than one parenting style in the upbringing of their child; therefore it would be a great idea for uninvolved parents to strive to adapt some values of authoritative parenting to allow the child to develop autonomy, confidence and maturity. Identity, Intersubjectivity and Communicative Action :: Philosophy Hume Papers

Identity, Intersubjectivity and Communicative Action Traditionally, attempts to verify communications between individuals and cultures appeal to 'public' objects, essential structures of experience, or universal reason. Contemporary continental philosophy demonstrates that not only such appeals, but fortuitously also the very conception of isolated individuals and cultures whose communication such appeals were designed to insure, are problematic. Indeed we encounter and understand ourselves, and are also originally constituted, in relation to others. In view of this the traditional problem of communication is inverted and becomes that of how we are sufficiently differentiated from one another such that communication might appear problematic. Following Hume's recognition that we cannot in principle have any experience of an experience transcending objectivity as such, Husserl's Phenomenological Epoche (1) suspends judgement on whether or not such a realm of "things-in-themselves" exists. Thus our experiences of material objects and descriptions thereof can no more be shown to correspond to such an "objective" standard than can our experiences and descriptions of immaterial objects and conscious states. Consequently interpersonal and intercultural communications concerning the supposedly "public" objects etc. of the material world seem no less problematic than Wittgenstein (2) and others have shown communication concerning the "private" objects of the immaterial world (of fantasies, dreams etc.) to be. Accepting that we cannot establish the "objectivity" of our experiences' content, Kant nevertheless attempts to resist a slide into relativism by insisting that they are mediated by rationally delineated categories which supposedly insure the transcendental or universal nature of their form, thereby providing an absolute standard against which we might check the veridicality of our descriptions of, and communications concerning, them. However as a priori preconditions of the possibility of experience such categories are obviously inexperienceable in themselves, and consequently must also fall to the phenomenological reduction. (3) Nevertheless, a moments reflection will confirm that our experiences do indeed exhibit structure or form, and that we are able, even from within, or wholly upon the basis of, the (phenomenologically reduced) realm of, our experiences per se, to distinguish between the flux of constantly changing and interrupted subjective appearances, and the relatively unc hanging and continuously existing objects constituted therein. Husserl confirms: ... cognitive acts, more generally, any mental acts, are not isolated particulars, coming or going in the stream of consciousness without any interconnections. As they are ESSENTIALLY related to one another, they display a teleological coherence and corresponding connections ... And on these connections, which present an intelligible unity a great deal depends.

Bruce Springsteins I Aint Got No Home (In This World Anymore) and the Great Depression The 1930s was the time of The Great Depression, which resulted in drastic changes. There were many people who starved trying to find employment, while many others did what was possible to survive a little longer. Everyone across the United Stated had tough times; especially families who tried to stick together to survive. American families were left out on the streets because they couldn’t pay their debts. Most had no other choice than to split up to find their own ways of surviving. The circumstances inspired many who wrote songs and poems.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The song ‘I Aint Got No Home (In This World Anymore)’ by Bruce Spingsteen was originally written by Woody Guthrie during the times of the Great Depression. This song is about a man who is forced to become a migrant worker. He lost his farm because of the drought that got to his crops. He couldn’t come up with enough money to pay the bankers who showed up at his door. He has six children who are scattered around trying to survive and a wife who died. He is a man who works when he finds work traveling from town to town.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  This song has many references to the conditions of many people during the Great Depression. The narrator is a migrant worker, like many others during that time. He was left with out a home because of the drought that took place during the 1930s’. Analysis of a Child Essay -- Papers

Analysis of a Child This assignment describes and analyses my involvement with a 13-year-old client Joe Smith, who was temporarily supported under section 25 (voluntary) of the Children's (Scotland) Act 1995 to be Looked After and Accommodated by the Local Authority. The process of intervention will be discussed from pre-engagement, assessment and gathering of information to client interaction and networking with other agencies. Using reflection, I will critically analyse how I planned and responded to the needs and risks in regard to Joe, and assess my role and the impact of my intervention. I shall also discuss my learning outcomes and the process of supervision. The theoretical knowledge gained and relevant legislation will be considered to demonstrate how I applied these in my practice. I acted in accordance with agency policies and procedures regarding the client's rights and confidentiality, by asking the family's permission to write about the case. I advised the family that the names would be changed to ensure confidentiality and that access to the assignment would be for course purposes only. (Social Worker Records Groups 1989) I also advised the family that they had a right to read my assignment in accordance with the Data Protection Act (1998) and under section (2) of the Access to Personal Files (Social Work) (Scotland) Regulations 1989 (Mays, 2001, p379) I felt it important to inform and involve the family, as a form of empowerment and to protect the agency and myself and to ensure good practice. What Would You Like to Ask?

A group of British Boys, Marooned on an Island A group of British school-boys find themselves marooned on an island (perhaps in the Pacific Ocean). They were being transported by an aircraft from England to some safer country on account of a nuclear war which had broken out in Europe. When, on the way, the aircraft caught fire the pilot released the detachable passenger-tube carrying the school-boys. The passenger-tube crash-landed on this island, and most of the boys managed to come out of it although some were trapped in the passenger-tube which was soon carried away by the waves into the open sea and lost.At first the boys who have landed on the island get scattered but soon they are able to get together when one of the boys by the name Ralph, having discovered a conch-shell, happens to blow it. Ralph now suggests that the boys should have a chief to guide them and to direct their activities. A boy called Jack, who is the leader of a group of choir-boys, says that he should be acc epted as the chief because he is chapter-chorister and head boy and because he can sing C sharp. But Ralph says that the chief should be chosen by votes. As the majority of the boys are in favour of Ralph, Ralph declares himself as the duly elected chief. Ralph now frames certain rules regarding the holding of meetings of the boys and about the conduct of these meetings. He says that, if anyone wishes to address the assembly at any meeting, he should ask for the conch and should hold the conch in his hands. Ralph Elected as the Chief. His Constructive Suggestion A conflict now begins between Ralph and Jack.Ralph had allowed Jack to continue as the leader of his choir-boys. Jack had the designated his choir-boys as the â€Å"hunters†. Having seen pigs on the island, Jack makes plans to hunt down and kill them in order to obtain meat for boys who feel fed up with the fruit which they have to eat everyday to keep themselves alive and who are craving for meat. Jack is a boy of an adventurous spirit, and the desire to hunt pigs becomes an obsession with him. Jack now begins to hate Ralphs because Ralph’s priorities are different fromJack’s. Ralph insists on the maintenance of the fire and the smoke, while Jack is wholly occupied with the hunting of pigs. Jack, having proved quite successful in his hunting expeditions, has won the support of the majority of the big boys who have come to be known as the â€Å"Biguns†. Jack therefore becomes increasingly defiant towards Ralph. Ralph now develops a liking for piggy who becomes an ardent supporter of Ralph. Jack hates Piggy even more than he hates Ralph. A beast on the Mountain-TopOne morning Sam and Eric, who are twins and who had been put on duty one night to keep the fire burning, come in a state of deep perturbation from the mountain-top and tell Ralph and the others that they have seen a beast on the mountain-top and that the beast had tried to chase them in order to seize them. Ralph, Di splaced By Jack. Simon’s Hallucination In the course of one such expedition, Jack offers the head of a slain pig as a gift to the beast in the hope that would not harm him and his hunters.Simon at this time is at his usual hunt in the forest and witnesses the action of Jack and his hunters and his hunters in offering a gift to the beast. Simon, Killed by Jack’s Hunters Jack has now begun to adopt the primitive method of tribal leaders. He refers to his followers as his â€Å"tribe† and he keeps his face painted all the time with red clay, white clay, and charcoal, asking his followers also to paint their faces in the same way. He has also begun to encourage mock-hunts in the course of which the boys dance and sing and chant certain words relating to their hunting operations and their killing of pigs.Jack and his followers now become more and more callous, with the result that, in the course of one mock-hunt, Simon is killed by the hunters. The hunters, in their frenzied excitement, had taken Simon for the beast and had pounced upon him. Jack does not experience the least regret over Simon’s death. Later, Jack accompanied by a couple of his supporters, raids Ralphs camp and takes away Piggy’s spectacles because he and his supporters need the spectacles in order to light a fire every time they want to roast pig-meat.Jack had now become quite oblivious of the to rescued from island ; but Ralph and Piggy are filling constantly worried as to whether any rescue will come, especially now when the cannot light a fire a fire and keep it burning as a distress-signal to the sailors of a passing ship. Piggy, killed. Ralph’s Life in Danger Piggy feels distraught because, without his spectacles he cannot see anything. He therefore says that he would go to Jack and demand the return of his spectacles. Ralphs thereupon calls jack â€Å"a swine† and â€Å"a bloody thief†.There is an exchange of blows between of blows betw een Ralphs and Jack. Then Piggy speaks and, addressing Jack’s savages, urges them to follow a sensible course of action instead of living like primitive savages. At this point Roger, who has become as savage as Jack, releases a rock from above in order to kill piggy. The Savages’ Pursuit of Ralph. Ralph, saved Ralph hides himself in the forest. But a little later he sees the twins standing guard at the entrance to Jack den. In a state of panic he runs out of the forest towards the beach. He stumbles and falls down on the sand.Thinking that now there is no hope for him, he cries for mercy. On looking up, however, he sees a British naval officer in full uniform standing close to him. Thus Ralph’s life has been saved. The officer says that he would take all the boys home. Ralph now bursts into tears. His whole body is shaken by spasms of grief. He weeps at â€Å"the loss of innocence†, at â€Å"the darkness of man’s heart†, and at the thought o f the death of Piggy who was his true friend. Rescue had come, but two noble-minded and innocent boys have been killed in account of the brutality of jack.Evil had reigned supreme on the island for some time. The Allegorical Significance of the Story Golding wanted to demonstrate that the evil instincts in a human being would rise to the surface and assert themselves as soon as that human being has been liberated from the restraints of civilized. The majority of people in this world are inherently evil. Evil is ineradicable, and it asserts itself as soon as it finds a favourable climate. The favourable climate consists in the removal of the fear of law and in the removal of all those restraints which civilized life imposes upon human beings.

Dramatic Monologue Essay

The salient Monologue is a type of a lyric verse form. It was developed in the straightlaced period. Robert Browning is said to have better the Dramatic Monologue, with poetrys such as My decease Duchess, and Soliloquy of a Spanish Cloister. As its name states, it is a soliloquy, hence it is a savoir-faire utter by a sensation psyche. In its fullest form, the melo prominent monologue has three salient features Firstly, a single person who is patently non the poet, utters the speech that makes up the whole of a poem, in a specific situation at a critical moment. The dramatic monologue must occur at a critical moment, as it is this feature that distinguishes the dramatic monologue from a monologue. It also gives a dramatic effect, as it gives the reader the whole step that the something has happened before which has led to the utterance of the dramatic monologue. For instance, in the poem, The Forsaken Merman by Matthew Arnold, the Mermans human married woman has abandone d him and their children in order to go pray in a church. The Merman utters the poem at the fourth dimension when he realizes that that his wife will never come back.Secondly, this person addresses and interacts with one or more separate people, besides we know of the he arers presence unless from clues in the discourse of the single talker. The attendee never speaks, but we know of what he or she says and does when the speaker tells us. For instance, in the poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S. Eliot, the implied auditor is Prufrocks caramel. We know of her presence when Prufrock addresses her, for example let us go then, you and I. This first railway of the poem tells us then that the poem is addressed to a specific person. some other instance is Oh, do not ask, What is it? This key out tells us that the auditor, that is the lover does interact with the speaker, Prufrock, but we know about these interactions only through and through what the speaker says.Thir dly, the main principle domineering the poets formulation of what the lyric speaker says is to erupt to the reader, in a way that enhances its interest, the speakers disposal and character. This focus on self disclosure is what distinguishes the dramatic monologue from its near relation, the dramatic lyric, which is also a monologue at an identifiablemoment but it does not reveal any new facts. For example, in the poem Porphyrias lover by Robert Browning, the lover who is the speaker, through the course of the poem reveals his insanity. He reveals that though Porphyria was beautiful and loved him, he was still dissatisfied until the point of date that he realizes that Porphyria worships him. It is at this point of time that he reveals his insanity, when unable to contain his emotions on realizing the extent of Porphyrias devotion, he wound her tomentum Three times her little throat around And strangled her. Thus, such revelations are characteristic of a Dramatic Monologue.A Dr amatic Monologue may or may not have altogether three characteristics. For instance, the poem Dover bank by Matthew Arnold does not take range at a critical moment. Yet, it is considered a dramatic monologue as it is uttered by a single speaker, and it has an implied auditor, the speakers love, whom he addresses in the tolerate stanza Ah, love, let us be admittedly. Thus the dramatic monologue is limber as a poetic style.Bibliography A Glossary of Literary Terms -M.H.
